It’s the spring season for Ball State women’s volleyball.

So head coach Steve Shondell is up early in the mornings for team practices from 7 to 9. Five days a week he gets up and heads to the gym. It’s all pretty routine as the team prepares for its first spring game this weekend.

That routine was thrown off a bit Wednesday, though, as his Facebook feed was overrun with pictures of a bald-headed, grey-bearded David Letterman.

And there on his chest?

A pleasant surprise.

“I had no idea that he had a Ball State volleyball T-shirt, it fit him beautifully,” Shondell said. “Definitely took me by surprise.”

Now, Shondell has been around the program for six years, and he’s not sure where that well-fitting Ball State volleyball shirt came from. He’s totally open to sending Letterman some more gear, of course, but in the mean time he’s enjoying the Cardinals’ viral moment.

“It was just invaluable exposure for Ball State volleyball and Ball State University,” Shondell said. “He must have gotten that from the bookstore.”
