Messina said she would donate 50 cents for every retweet and 25 cents for every favorite. Then, the tweet went viral. By Friday, Messina’s tweet had been retweeted more than 200,000 times and had over 472,000 likes. Messina admitted she could not fulfill her promise at that point and set up a GoFundMe account to ask for donations.
“I tweeted because I had absolutely no idea there would be that much support around the idea. So, unfortunately, I don’t have the funds to support this, but here is a link to donate to one of the best hospitals there is. St. Jude is changing lives. This is where we start,” Messina wrote on the fundraising page.
St. Jude said in press release they sincerity appreciated the awareness Messina and her Twitter campaign brought to the St. Jude mission.
Messina has set a goal of $50,000. By Friday, she blew past it, raising $62,000.
Messina is a member of the Tri Delta sorority at WSU. Tri Delta sororities across the country have adopted St. Jude as its national philanthropic partner.
