Fake photos of Puri deities go viral

  • Summary: BHUBANESWAR: The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) in Puri on Monday said they would lodge a complaint with police after a fake photograph of the deities went viral on the social media. There were also some photos of newly-carved idols and burial ritual of the old idols in Koilibaikuntha of temple during Nabakalebara. “We found on different social networking sites a photo of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra on ‘Ratna Bedi’ (elevated platform) in sanctum sanctorum. The temple administration then lodged a complaint with the state Crime Branch, which later confirmed that the pictures were morphed. The photograph, claimed to have been clicked during ‘Ratna Chita’ ritual, is not real as cameras are not allowed into the temple.

We will lodge a police complaint, seeking action against miscreants for propagating erroneous information about temple,” temple’s public relations officer Laxmidhar Pujapanda told the media in Puri.Temple officials are likely to approach the social networking sites, requesting the regulators to remove the fake photographs.

    The incident rekindled memory of circulation of a photograph, which claimed to be of ‘Bramha’ (soul of deities), during 2015 Nabakalebara (creation of new idols) festival in the 12th century shrine.Social media was abuzz with some photos, which people say, were of Bramha. It was alleged that some servitors, who were assigned to transfer the ‘Bramha’ of deities from old idols to newly-carved ones during Nabakalebara, clicked the secret ritual in their cellphones. There were also some photos of newly-carved idols and burial ritual of the old idols in Koilibaikuntha of temple during Nabakalebara.
