Florida Pizza Hut threatens to punish employees planning to flee Irma in viral note

A Pizza Hut in Jacksonville, Fla. is facing backlash after a manager posted a note threatening to punish workers planning to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Irma.

The one-page note began addressing Pizza Hut employees by saying the company’s “#1 priority is the safety and security of our team” before outlining the strict rules.

“If evacuating, you will have a 24-hour period before storm ‘grace period’ to not be scheduled,” the letter reads. “You cannot evacuate Friday for a Tuesday storm event!”

“Failure to show for these shifts, regardless of reason, will be considered a no call/no show and documentation will be issued,” the note continued.

The detailed note also stressed workers “MUST return within 72 hours.”

Irma was expected to hit Jacksonville on Tuesday. Lenny Curry, the city’s mayor, had ordered about 264,000 residents in some areas to evacuate before Saturday.

A rep for Pizza Hut did not respond to a request for comment. However, the company posted a statement on its site addressing the issue.

“We absolutely do not have a policy that dictates when team members can leave or return from a disaster, and the manager who posted this letter did not follow company guidelines,” the company said. “We can also confirm that the local franchise operator has addressed this situation with the manager involved.”

The note went viral on social media and many criticized the company for risking its employees’ lives.

“Major @pizzahut fail. I don’t eat your ick pizza, anyway — haven’t in decades – but this is truly shameful,” Twitter user Katie Mueller wrote.

“@pizzahut why do you threaten workers who flee Irma? This is sick!” user @centurysavior wrote.

“@pizzahut You guys are closed on Christmas, but sending delivery drivers to their death for a hurricane? What’s up with that?” user @Avyrey wrote.
