If the Raiders ever have the ball on the 1-yard line during the waning seconds of a Super Bowl, you can probably safely assume that they won’t be making the same mistake the Seahawks made near the end of Super Bowl XLIX.
Of course, that was the game where the Seahawks decided to throw it from one yard out instead of handing the ball to Marshawn Lynch. Russell Wilson’s pass ended up being intercepted on the goal line, which sealed the Seahawks’ 28-24 loss to the Patriots.
After signing the largest contract extension in NFL history on Friday, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr sounded like a guy who doesn’t ever plan to make the same mistake.
During his press conference, Carr was asked if he feels any added pressure after signing the largest extension ever, and that’s when he gave what might go down as Marshawn Lynch’s new favorite quote of all-time.
“There’s no pressure, there’s no ‘We’ll be on the 1-yard line and I won’t give it to Marshawn and I’ll throw it.’ None of that stuff,” Carr said.
Boom. With that one quote, Carr has now joined the millions of people who would’ve given the ball to Marshawn on that fateful Super Bowl play. Also, please notice that Carr couldn’t help but smile after he made his comment. That’s a guy who knew exactly what he was saying.
Carr’s quote comes less than a month after ESPN reported that Richard Sherman is still kind of bitter about the way the Seahawks lost in that game, which makes sense because he’s probably tired of hearing about it every second of every day.
As for Carr, it sounds like he’ll be ready to hand the ball off to Marshawn on every single play next season if that’s what the Raiders’ coaching staff wants.
“I don’t care about the stats,” Carr said. “That’s not my No. 1 objective. I don’t care if I throw 10 touchdowns next year, if we win every game, that’s all I care about.”
By the way, he’s just kidding, that’s not all he cares about. He also cares about Chick-Fil-A.
