The Short List: #GOPDebate strikes back; deputy in viral video fired; your fancy fish might be fake

Can Ben Carson assert himself as the new front-runner?

Boulder is famously liberal. The Republican field is famously not. What will happen at the University of Colorado debate tonight? A preview: Donald Trump will still be at center stage, but he’s now trailing Ben Carson in three polls in Iowa. Uh-oh. Carson is soft-spoken. Trump, not so much. And they’ve been less friendly in recent days, so watch for sparks to fly. (That’s not a Colorado pot joke.) The record-size GOP field (there will be 10 on stage tonight) is beginning to winnow. Here’s how to watch tonight’s debate, which starts at 8 p.m. ET on CNBC (the undercard debate is at 6 p.m. ET.) We’ve got full social coverage of #GOPdebate – follow @usatoday2016 on Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat for live updates tonight, and look for Periscopes from @USATODAY. And of course, you can find our bingo cards here.
