Hein Koh is a Brooklynite, an artist, and a mother of two. She’s also an incredible badass who’s taking the Internet by storm, thanks to a recent Instagram post. Just a few weeks ago, Koh uploaded a #TBT picture of herself tandem-breastfeeding her twin infants while getting work done on her laptop—and the attention hasn’t stopped since. Not only is her image visually striking, but it’s resonating with people everywhere because it makes a powerful point about working moms.
“#tbt [to] when my twins were 5 weeks old, and despite the sleep deprivation and frequent breastfeeding, I was still getting shit done,” Koh wrote in her Instagram caption. “Marina Abramovic thinks children hold women back in the art world, but as [one sure] put so aptly, ‘FUKKK THAT.’ All Marina knows is her own experience, and it may be true for her, but that is not everyone’s experience nor truth.”
Koh explained that becoming a new mother—of twins, no less—helped her become a better artist. She developed time-management skills, grew more efficient, and found it easier to prioritize different projects. Koh said she also learned to multitask, but we gathered that from the whole working-while-tandem-breastfeeding thing. “I learned to function (even if barely) on very little sleep,” she wrote. “And out of the chaos, insanity, and even torture at times, a flood of new emotions entered into my work—becoming more interesting and layered as a result.”
Koh emphasized that this was simply her experience. She wasn’t saying that being an artist-parent made her better than other non-parent artists or non-artist parents. What she did want to convey was that by creatively embracing the unique challenges of parenthood, she became a better mother, artist, and person. And she hoped others could see how instead of holding her back, the obstacles of new motherhood pushed her forward.
