A tornado touched down briefly late Tuesday afternoon in eastern Iowa, as seen in a video recorded by one resident.

In the 1 minute, 18 second clip captured by 44-year-old Aaron Meyer of Conroy, which was first obtained by the Iowa Storm Chasing Network, you can see the tornado rolling through open fields near the small town.

Meyer told the Register on Wednesday that he was between “an eighth- and a quarter-mile” from the twister.

“I’ve never been that close to one, I’ll tell ya that,” Meyer can be heard saying in the background of the video. “Never even seen one.”

Meyer, a livestock farmer who cares for pigs and sheep, said the weather conditions were “as calm as can be” at his property.

“I didn’t have a rain drop, no bolt of lightning — nothing,” Meyer said. “It was calm as can be.

“My dog’s a big chicken and he’s out in the front yard taking a nap.”

Near the final 25 seconds of the video, a number of trees are seen uprooted and blown high into the sky at one of Meyer’s neighbors homes.

The video was also posted on the Iowa Storm Chasing Network’s Facebook page. It has generated more than 168,000 views and 2,790 shares as 9:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Meyer said his wife also recorded video of the Tuesday’s tornado, which was also shared by the Iowa Storm Chasing Network. That video has more than 700,000 views and 15,000 shares as of 9:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Iowa County Emergency Management executive director Josh Humphrey said the tornado in Conroy occurred shortly after 5:50 p.m. Tuesday, causing damage to crops as well as minor damage to outbuildings and homes on three properties in the area.

No injuries were reported, and Humphrey said that “there was no notice, and no severe thunderstorm warning in the area.”

Meyer said “it might have been a completely different video” if someone’s house was hit by the tornado.

“Fortunately I didn’t get to see that,” Meyer said, adding that he plans to help with the clean-up efforts. “Glad nobody got hurt.”
