The “Rosewood”/”The Brothers” actor shared a black and white video clip of Owens singing the timely “A Change is Gonna Come,” and the video has exploded. The video is at over 12.4 million views and climbing on Facebook, with another 1.7 million and climbing on YouTube.

Owens sings the song with his father Thomas Owens. The song and video was recorded in 2013 for Maryville University’s Kids Rock Cancer.

“I thought it was dope,” Owens says of Chestnut’s support. “I’ve been watching Morris Chestnut’s work my whole life. To see someone with so many followers pick up on it was crazy.”

Owens says his camp tweeted the video to Chestnut, who apparently liked what he say and responded by sending it out (he hasn’t actually commented on the video).

Singer Michael McDonald noticed the buzz, and requested Owens and his father to perform the song at McDonald’s concert at Peabody Opera House Nov. 3 (Owens was already a special guest star on the show).

Owens new album is “Soul of Cash.”
