Viral Ghost Story ‘Dear David’ Headed to Big Screen

New Line picked up the horror package inspired by a ghost story tweeted out by a BuzzFeed contributor.

New Line has picked up Dear David, a spooky package inspired by a ghost story that went viral.

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback, the banner behind the Lego movies that also is involved in the It pics, will produce along with BuzzFeed Studios’ Lauren Dolgen and Hieu Ho.

Mike van Waes is writing the script based on a story by Van Waes and exec-turned-screenwriter Evan Turner. Turner will also executive produce.

Dear David finds its roots in a story by former BuzzFeed contributor Adam Ellis, who unfolded a ghost tale over Twitter in August 2017 centering on a dead boy that was haunting him and following him around. The story went viral over the course of several months, with Ellis amassing over one million followers.

It is unclear what the film’s story will be, but the studio is describing it as a high-concept horror-thriller.

Van Waes is one of New Line’s go-to horror guys, having written The Crooked Man, based on a character from the company’s The Conjuring 2, as well as Not in Kansas, a Wizard of Oz-themed horror project also at New Line. He is currently writing a live-action remake of Disney’s animated movie Lilo & Stitch.

Van Waes is repped by CAA and Grandview.
